Tokyo Diner - London WC2H 7JP: Reviews & Ratings
Now that's what good food should be like. Amazing, warm atmosphere right at the entrance. Service so quick it'll leave you confused. The food is to feed your soul. The beef soup is just, I can't put it in words. It may have rained straight from the heavens. The chicken katsu don was so creamy! The complimentary tea is much appreciated in the cold weather. The nigiri was also such a delight. Highly recommend this place, they've earned me as a regular.
Authentic Japanese ambiance right in the heart of Chinatown! The food was delicious with generous portions, and the service was impressively fast. A lovely touch was the waitress serving tea during dinner—it really added to the experience. Great value for the price. A perfect spot if you're feeling nostalgic for Japanese cuisine.
We were out fairly late around the Leicester Square–Chinatown area. We were looking for a suitable restaurant, but many were already closed, kirchen closed or looked empty. Luckily, we ended up at Tokyo Diner. Even though we didn’t share much of a common language, we quickly got a table upstairs and bottles of Sapporo beer to quench our thirst. My Chicken Katsu Curry was tasty, and my companion’s Udon noodle dish was excellent. The restaurant has a slightly worn feel, but it was clean. This is a place that serves good Japanese food at a reasonable price.

This iconic Japanese diner offers an authentic culinary experience that’s both comforting and vibrant, perfect for those seeking classic Japanese flavors served with heartfelt simplicity.
Stepping inside, you’re greeted by a warm, welcoming atmosphere where time seems to slow down. The attentive service is impressively swift, matching the relaxed yet lively vibe of the place. The complimentary Jasmine tea is a thoughtful touch, soothing and refreshing—especially welcome on colder days.
The menu is a treasure trove of well-loved Japanese staples. The Chicken Katsu Curry & Rice stands out with its perfectly crispy coating beneath a rich, creamy curry sauce that warms the soul. Equally memorable is the Chicken Katsu Don, with tender, juicy chicken enveloped in a creamy sauce that brings a comforting depth to every bite. For vegetarians, the Tofu Katsu Ju offers a delightful alternative, crispy and satisfying without compromising flavor.
Noodles lovers will appreciate the Curry Udon and the hot soba dishes, both expertly prepared with flavorful broths and expertly cooked noodles that retain just the right bite. The Gyu Don, a classic bowl of thinly sliced beef and onions simmered in sweet soy, hits familiar nostalgic notes, though its price reflects the central location rather than the humble origins of the dish in Japan.
Tokyo Diner also excels at small plates and sides that enhance any meal: the Age-Dashi Tofu is silky and perfectly fried, while Chicken Kara-Age delivers juicy morsels with a flavorful crunch. Fresh seafood like Salmon Don and Prawn Nigiri add a delicate balance to the menu’s heavier options, showcasing a well-rounded approach to Japanese dining.
What truly makes Tokyo Diner special is its consistency and authenticity. After decades of service, it remains a beloved institution, praised for honest flavors, generous portions, and a genuine Japanese dining experience amidst the hustle of London.
